Let's make this Earth Day different.

Let's all get outside, and clean up our neighborhoods.  Especially in Cape Coral.  Go outside and clean up the vacant lots next door.  Bring your children outside with you.  Make them each carry a trashbag.  Don't go home until all the trashbags are full.

Let's look at what we're doing inside.  Let's reconsider the ways we use electricity.  Let's see where we can cut back.  Turn off unused lights.  Raise the thermostat one degree.  Change your filters regularly.  Change all your incandescent lightbulbs to compact fluorescents.  Unplug appliances that aren't being used.  Get rid of the refrigerator in your hot garage.  Reset the pool filter timer so it runs less hours per day.  Conserve.

Lets look at our trash containers.  Let's make sure we're recycling everything we can.  Get all aluminum, plastic and glass into one bin.  Get all paper and cardboard into the other.  Recycle your newspapers and junk mail.  Tell your post office you don't want to receive any more junk mail.  Save your Publix and Walmart plastic bags and return them to the stores (they all have bins to recycle the bags).  Don't buy eggs packaged in Styrofoam.  Don't buy coffee in Styrofoam cups.  Ask for paper cups and plates instead.  Encourage local friends and business owners to be less wasteful. 

Use clean, phosphate-free detergents.  Use reusable containers for leftover food instead of aluminum foil and plastic wrap.  Use rags instead of paper towels.

Precycle...don't buy products with excessive or wasteful packaging.  Buy products packaged using recycled materials.  Look for it on the label.

Buy cars with better gas mileage.  Trade in your gas-guzzling SUV and buy a hybrid.

Vote with your dollars...only buy from environmentally responsible companies.

Vote with your votes...only vote for environmentally friendly candidates.

Speak up in public...spread the word...write to your newspapers...write to Congress.
